Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels injured his elbow and has been out since week 8. He has already been ruled out for their next game against the New York Giants. This is the seventh game Daniels has missed this season, a heartbreaking stretch that has been plagued by an avalanche of injuries.
In their week 11 faceoff against the Minnesota Vikings, Daniels received a crushing blow. Teti injured his left elbow after taking down linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel and was slammed to the turf. Unbelievably, this was at least the second time he had dislocated that same elbow as he did it for the first time in Week 9. In the third quarter of the game, with the Commanders trailing 17-0, head coach Dan Quinn decided to replace Daniels with backup quarterback Marcus Mariota.
>His second season was a brutal campaign due to numerous injuries. He took a step forward by being a full participant in individual drills during practice on Wednesday. Upon closer inspection, while he did re-injure the injury, there was no structural harm or re-injury to speak of. Quinn said putting Daniels down for the season hasn’t been discussed at this point.
“As far as what decisions are ahead, we haven’t gone down that road,” – Dan Quinn
Daniels has dealt with major injuries his entire career. In addition to the right elbow injury, he’s missed recent games due to a left knee sprain and a hamstring injury. The overall impact from these serious overuse injuries has led to legitimate questions about his availability in the future. Despite this setback, there is optimism that Daniels may return in time for the following game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Quinn explained why he decided to pull Daniels from the game against the Vikings. They did this while keeping the best interests of the player and the team in mind.
“It wasn’t going like we wanted, and I thought it was the best call. It wasn’t a difficult one that I wrestled with in that spot. I said I was going to make the best decision for him and the team.” – Dan Quinn
The Commanders hope to aggressively regroup after their discouraging 31-0 drubbing in Minny. As they prepare for their recent addition’s debut against the Giants, they’ll do so without their starter, as well. The team hopes that Daniels can recover sufficiently to contribute again soon, but for now, plans must adjust to accommodate his absence.
