Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels sprained his left knee during Thursday’s game against the Green Bay Packers, casting doubt on his availability for Sunday’s matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders. The injury was sustained near the beginning of the matchup which resulted in a 27-18 defeat for the Commanders.
The team and coaching staff are still evaluating Daniels’ status in the wake of the injury. An MRI taken the day after didn’t reveal any structural damage. Even as the weekend begins, his status is up in the air. This developing circumstance presents a tremendous opportunity for both Daniels and the Commanders. If so, it would mark the first game Daniels has missed during his professional career.
Daniels’ incredible leap comes after being named the Offensive Rookie of the Year last campaign. His health was an integral part of the Commanders’ surprise 12-5 run. That magical run propelled them into playoff position, culminating in a run to the NFC Championship Game. That being said, Daniels has a concerning history with injuries. His season last year ended after he exited the Week 7 win against the Carolina Panthers with a rib injury. He missed the second half of New Orleans’ regular-season finale against the Dallas Cowboys with mild leg soreness.
The Commanders have proven to be adept at overcoming unexpected injury hurdles. Throughout last year, no one other than one starter, defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, missed even nine games. If Daniels is unable to play this weekend, that’ll place the reins in the hands of backup quarterback Michael Mariota. He’s poised to lead the charge again. In two games last season where Daniels was sidelined, Mariota demonstrated his capabilities, completing 33 of 41 passes for 366 yards and four touchdowns.
Longtime Nation Institute writing fellow and former WaPoallspro Football writer John Keim has been following Daniels’ story. He’s covered the Commanders since 1994. Keim, who writes for the Washington Examiner and hosts ‘The John Keim Report’ on ESPN Richmond radio, has closely followed Daniels’ development and performance throughout his career.
As game day nears, fans and analysts across the country will be closely monitoring to see if Daniels can get back on the field. By ESPN’s Adam Schefter telling you that’s not bad. He said that Daniels’ knee sprain will likely sideline him for this important game. It will be up to the Commanders to make a strategic decision there based on his recovery, whether he’s ready to play, etc.
