Colts Sign Four-Time Pro Bowl Cornerback Xavien Howard

The Indianapolis Colts have signed four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard. This strategic offensive move addresses the team’s various persistent cornerback ailments. Howard’s agent, David Canter, confirmed the signing. This signing is a huge addition for the Colts as they’re working through injuries to various key members in the secondary.

Xavien Howard, famous for his elite ball skills, led the NFL in 2020 with ten interceptions. He left a mammoth legacy in 2018 when he returned seven interceptions for touchdowns. His background in press-man coverage matches perfectly with the defensive scheme being run by Colts DC Lou Anarumo. Anarumo, who has a tight bond with Howard, was the Dolphins’ defensive backs coach in Howard’s first two seasons in the league from 2016 to 2017.

At present, the Colts are dealing with severe injuries to their cornerback corps. That leaves prominent slot cornerback Kenny Moore II, Jaylon Jones, and 2023 second-rounder JuJu Brents all affected. In light of this difficult stretch, Howard’s signing is generally viewed as a move that could provide a much-needed boost for the defense.

Even with that historic success, Xavien Howard’s career has not come without controversy. Over the last year, he came to national prominence with a high-profile, widely criticized lawsuit. He had been accused of sending a nude picture to a teenage boy — of that boy’s mother. An attorney representing a third woman also accused him of sharing recordings of their sexual encounters. But he was never criminally charged.

Even as Howard goes to the Colts, Anarumo is hopeful about his ability to bounce back with a more well-rounded game.

“He can go get the ball. And he’s proven that throughout his NFL career that he’s been an elite interceptor. So, we’re hoping — we’ll give him some time to get back into football shape, because that takes a while — but we’re hoping that we can get some of those interceptions going.” – Lou Anarumo

In December, the Bengals previewed Howard up close and personal while Anarumo was still their defensive coordinator. This is indicative of him being on their radar long before he officially joined the Colts. Should Howard get back on track, he’ll be a major find for the Colts. By learning how to grow despite or around their more aggressive defensive style, he could better boost what he brings to the team.
