Colts Seek Resurgence as GM Ballard Aims to Break Four-Year Playoff Drought

Humanizing an example Indianapolis Colts looking forward to a make or break season General Manager Chris Ballard has vowed to end the team’s maddening four-year playoff drought. With fresh additions and strategic changes, the Colts aim to revitalize a team that finished last season with a lackluster performance. Added to that is the urgency brought on by the Pacers appearance in the NBA Finals last season as training camp creeps ever so closer.

Chris Ballard, who has spent 25 years in the NFL, said he is not pleased with the failed seasons the team has produced. More importantly, he saw the potential in his new roster. To his credit, he came through with the hard truths that have plagued the franchise for the past half decade.

“And, not being able to get over that hump the past four years, it’s definitely been frustrating,” – Chris Ballard.

To further improve the team’s secondary, the Colts made a big splash in free agency by signing cornerback Charvarius Ward. This addition aims to bolster a defensive unit that was among the league’s worst last season. They finished 29th in total yards allowed per game (361.2) and were 24th in points allowed per game (25.1). The Colts are counting on Ward’s addition to bring the support he needs to turn these stat lines around in a big way.

In addition to acquiring Ward, the Colts hired Lou Anarumo, formerly of the Cincinnati Bengals, as their new defensive coordinator. His experience and innovative strategies will be key as the team looks to improve a historically struggled defense.

Colts leader Zaire Franklin on high expectations on a young team

“It’s a bothersome thing, especially with the expectations we have here in Indy,” – Zaire Franklin.

Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner called it a wakeup call after the 49ers. In 2020, he helped lead the San Francisco 49ers to Super Bowl LIV before signing with the Colts. To that end, he made it clear that all of the guys know what’s at stake during this final season.

“It doesn’t matter who you are, your name’s attached to that,” – DeForest Buckner.

The Colts are in the midst of a thrilling QB competition. Rookie Anthony Richardson Sr. is pushing as hard as anybody’s ever pushed a future HOF veteran Daniel Jones for the starting job. The team chose Richardson as their seventh overall draft pick in 2023, infusing the franchise with excitement and optimism about a bright new future. Jones, a former first-round draft pick, was cut by the New York Giants last season. Today, he brings an incredibly valuable experience and leadership to the quarterback room.

Ballard went on to emphasize the significance of this competition, indicating that it will be a point of emphasis at the start of training camp. He says he couldn’t be more excited about working with the gifted roster. He highlighted a few central players who are committed to doing better.

“Just seeing the team that we had and the potential that we had and all the players we have, some of the core guys we still have here,” – Chris Ballard.

With training camp just around the corner, excitement is in the air for all fans and players respectively. Today, the Colts are understandably excited to put the disappointments of the recent past behind them. They’re looking for an even more powerful push for a playoff spot in 2023! They’ve got all-stars and future Hall of Famers on their squad. Together, they form a potentially winning formula that’ll help get them back onto the postseason stage.
