The Indianapolis Colts took a progressive approach with the overall third pick in last week’s NFL Draft. They chose tight end Tyler Warren to help take their offensive game to the next level. The Colts have struggled to find a reliable tight end since Eric Ebron recorded over 500 receiving yards in the 2018 season. Warren’s addition is likely to be a game changer for the team, and particularly for whoever develops into the team’s starting QB this year.
Given the players in this draft class, Warren will have a good claim to being one of the best run-after-catch players. He can add on yards after the catch. This invaluable skill will significantly enhance the Colts’ new wave offensive approach that failed resoundingly in recent seasons. The presence of a dynamic tight end like Warren is anticipated to create new opportunities for the quarterback, who will benefit from a reliable target.
Outside of the Colts’ exciting choice, the Indianapolis draft continued to be eventful with big moves from other teams. Shedeur Sanders selected by Pittsburgh with the 20th overall pick, setting off a confetti-raining moment in his career. The Cleveland Browns opted to trade back from the No. 1 pick, a decision that allowed them to strengthen their defensive line. While Graham would have been a great fit for the Browns, they settled on other directions.
The Atlanta Falcons were in the news again! They dealt that package of picks, plus a first-rounder from 2026, to the Los Angeles Rams to get back into the first round. Their first pick with this choice, they were able to draft edge rusher James Pearce Jr., addressing a major strength of their defense. Still, some analysts have criticized the Saints for surrendering a future first-round pick for this trade.
The second intriguing subplot was Donovan Jackson’s draft status, as he wasn’t taken anywhere close to where many thought he’d go. Will Johnson T, Michigan Will Johnson was thought to be a Round 1 lock. Worries over an old knee issue made him plummet down the draft board. Johnson was one of just two players to remain in the green room. Now, Wheaton was okay when he didn’t hear his name called during the first round.
Analysts lauded the Rams for their move to trade back and stockpile an additional first-round pick in 2026. Meanwhile, despite their trade down from the top pick, the Browns remain focused on acquiring blue-chip talent to solidify their roster.
