Philip Rivers, one of the great players in NFL annals, celebrated his 44th birthday Monday. In his farewell 2015 season, he guided the Colts to a very impressive 11-5 record. This accomplishment clinched them a playoff berth as an AFC wild card. Completing 68% of his passes, Rivers displayed his immense talent in the 2020 season. On top of that, he tossed a staggering 24 touchdown passes.
As things currently stand, the Colts are in pretty deep trouble. Their backup available on the practice squad is journeyman QB Brett Rypien. Riley Leonard is fighting through a knee injury. The team is convinced that Rivers’ encyclopedic knowledge of their offensive scheme provides them a huge advantage. His pre-existing connection to head coach Shane Steichen, formed under the latter’s tutelage as a member of the Los Angeles Chargers, only adds to their edge.
During Monday’s workout, Rivers reportedly threw the ball well, showcasing his ability to still perform at a high level despite his retirement. The Colts are optimistic that his familiarity with their system could offer them a realistic chance to remain competitive in a challenging season.
This decision points both to the Colts’ urgency to address the hole that Jones left and internal pressure to find a reliable replacement. The team is weighing its options carefully, considering Rivers’ past contributions and experience as they navigate this critical juncture in their season.
