It’s official – the Indianapolis Colts are starting Daniel Jones. We’re talking about perhaps the most consequential decision for the franchise in a decade. This announcement comes on the heels of Jones’ signing with the Colts in March to a one-year, $14 million contract. The plan all along was for a heated competition between Jones and rookie Anthony Richardson. Some recent court decisions have completely shifted the tide in that fight.
Head Coach Shane Steichen later confirmed the decision to go with Jones, while stressing that small factors played the most crucial role in deciding. Further complicating matters, he said, was a lack of clear separation between the two quarterbacks during training camp. Richardson’s injuries and inconsistency played a considerable role in the team’s determination to seek competition at the quarterback position.
“And I do what I feel is best for the Colts in 2025, and I’ve got to make these decisions. That’s what I get paid to do and I’ve got to go with what I feel is right.” – Shane Steichen
Daniel Jones’ struggles with the New York Giants last season went from a mid-season benching to being released entirely. Now, he gets the opportunity to revive his career with the Indianapolis Colts. After he got paid, analysts and fans alike dissected his performance over the last two years. In 2023 he posted QBR scores of 36.3 and in 2024, 47.8. The Colts were thrilled when he agreed to fill this new position. Just like on the field, they expect better results off the field from his experience.
Anthony Richardson has accepted the gauntlet of competition. He has earned that opportunity with an excellent training camp and some flashy plays during the team’s preseason contests. All of that has raised eyebrows on his long-term status with the franchise. This leaves the Colts with a very important decision on his fifth-year team option for the 2027 season. Stephen A. Smith recently warned that Richardson’s NFL career might be in jeopardy if he cannot secure a starting role.
Steichen called Jones a stud and a thief and praised his leadership. He stated, “I think the guys have taken to him. He’s a great communicator with the guys. You can see that veteran presence out there. So, I’m excited for that.”
As the Colts move forward with their season, they’ll continue to evaluate both quarterbacks’ growth. Making Jones a full time starter creates a major shift in his career path. It could have serious implications for Richardson’s long term future in the organization.
