The Indianapolis Colts have taken a huge step towards becoming the league’s darling this season. They’ve made their best start since their Super Bowl run in 2009! Under first-year head coach Shane Steichen, the team has become arguably the most dangerous contender in the NFL. They have the best record in the league right now and are the highest scoring team in the league!
The Colts have made quite the run in recent weeks. They won those two victories by an average of 27.5 points! In their latest game, they secured a narrow 31-27 victory against the Arizona Cardinals, showcasing their resilience and competitive spirit. The winning streak has reinvigorated the team’s hope and morale. It further serves to highlight their candidate potential for a deep playoff run.
Winning through the first six weeks of the season is not something that, historically speaking, the Colts have been consistent with. Over the last 10 years, they’ve only managed to do this in spectacular fashion once. Amazingly though, never four games over .500 in any of those cases. Yet this season, at least so far, has been a tale of a different tune as they look to distance themselves from history’s haunt.
In 2018, the Colts faced a challenging start with a 1-5 record but managed to rally late in the season to secure a playoff berth. They started this year on a high note, having upset the Miami Dolphins in Week 1. This victory beamed their spirit of defiance and their willingness to match sword to sword.
“Whether we win or lose, whether it’s a blowout or not, I think our mentality is just pushing ourselves and being the best versions of ourselves every single day,” said linebacker Zaire Franklin. His words go to show the team’s focus on self-help and determination during the course of a season.
While that sounds smooth given their recent results, nearly every match hasn’t been free of peril. Quarterback Daniel Jones remarked on the need for improvement: “It wasn’t the cleanest the whole time and we certainly made some mistakes here and there.” This kind of honest self-assessment is a positive sign that the team recognizes where they must get sharper as they move deeper into the season.
Perhaps that’s why the Colts are flourishing on the field and in the win column behind a versatile, deep offensive cast. Standout players such as receiver Josh Downs and a stingy defensive unit have them winning. Looking ahead to keeping that momentum, the Colts hope to keep climbing the rankings.
As the year goes on, fans will have to stay tuned. Experts will be watching just as intently to see if the Colts can continue their success. The team’s hot start has many harkening back to their miraculous 2009 season. That year, they cruised all the way to Super Bowl XLIV, powered by the arm of the future Hall-of-Famer Peyton Manning.
