Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson might find his way back on the practice field as soon as Saturday. Unfortunately, he dislocated his pinkie finger on Thursday night’s preseason opener versus the Baltimore Ravens. Richardson left the game in the first quarter after an absolutely savage toss thanks to unblocked Raven linebacker David Ojabo. The hit that led to his injury and subsequent removal.
Prior to the injury, Richardson had completed 2 of 3 passes. He ran back to the sideline at full speed. Almost immediately, observers noticed that his right, or throwing hand pinky was bent in a disconcerting angle. They had immediate and grave concern for his health, and the Colts’ medical staff rushed him to the sidelines.
After the injury, Richardson had his wrist X-rayed at halftime, ruling out any fractures. The medical team immediately intubated the horse and relocated the joint. Now, he’s as enthusiastic as ever to refine his hold on the pigskin and reestablish himself back into the world of football.
With Richardson on the shelf this past week, it was QB2 Daniel Jones’ turn. He had an all around amazing performance, only throwing 10 completions on 21 passes but for 144 yards. Jones didn’t sit the entire final 23 minutes of the first half. Looking ahead to the second half, he turned over the quarterbacking duties to rookie Riley Leonard. Head coach Shane Steichen’s call to limit Richardson’s time the rest of the way was a precautionary one.
“It’ll be a little bit more so in the morning. But I’ll be good.” – Anthony Richardson
Colts players are schedule to have a travel day off on Friday. Even though their outdoor training camp in Westfield, Indiana officially starts Saturday. Richardson jumped at the chance to participate in the practice session, assuming his recent – and thus far remarkable – recovery persists.
Of course, the Colts organization is hopeful that Richardson will be back before long. This hope provides him the opportunity to continue growing as their long-term starting QB.
Overall, the Colts organization remains hopeful that Richardson’s quick recovery will allow him to continue developing as their starting quarterback.
