Colts Acquire Darius Gardner in Hopes of Strengthening Pass Defense

The Colts made an aggressive move to fortify their roster. They’ve acquired cornerback Darius Gardner from the New York Jets! In return, the Colts traded wide receiver Adonai Mitchell and two first-rounders to the New York Jets. From Indianapolis’ perspective, the Colts are doing this trade to improve their marginal pass defense. They have failed miserably in this aspect, in the bottom third of the league.

Darius Gardner, the Seahawks’ No. 4 overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft. He shortly made a name as a future top player. He became the first Jets cornerback since Darrelle Revis to earn Pro Bowl selections in each of his first two seasons with the Jets. In spite of his initial success, Gardner hasn’t set foot on the postseason stage. It gives him a fresh start where he can restore faith in his career while helping the proper team greatly fill a need.

Gardner has been out of the concussion protocol. That gives him just enough time to make his highly-anticipated debut with the Colts in their first home game against the visiting Atlanta Falcons. His arrival couldn’t come at a better time. The Colts are confident that his addition will immediately improve their secondary and overall defensive unit.

Gardner expressed his excitement about joining the Colts, stating, “It’s a great group of guys already here, and that’s what makes it even more special.” His infectious enthusiasm is indicative of the first great impression he seems to have made on his new teammates and coaching staff.

Defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson said Gardner adapted quickly to the new team environment. “You would have thought he’s been here for a year,” Henderson remarked, highlighting how seamlessly Gardner has integrated into the Colts’ locker room. That rapport will be key as he prepares to take the field for his first impact with the team.

Gardner’s recent work has not met the requirements of the job. There’s plenty of reason to be hopeful that this change can help him recapture his All-Pro level play. The Colts are hoping that he provides a new energy and new technique to their terrifying defensive front seven.

As the Colts get ready to take on the Falcons, Gardner will surely be the center focus of attention. They’ll be counting on him to help him be impactful right away and start to reverse their recent pass defense disaster.
