Cleveland Browns Select Dorian Sanders in Surprising Draft Move

By everyone’s estimation, the Cleveland Browns pulled off the biggest surprise of the 2025 NFL Draft. They turned heads by choosing Tennessee State quarterback Dorian Sanders in the fifth round. Initially projected as a potential top pick earlier in the year, Sanders ended up being the sixth quarterback chosen, raising questions about the factors that led to his unexpected drop in the draft order.

Correctly, in this instance, said Browns general manager Andrew Berry of Sanders and his glowing about the decision to draft him. The team spoke very highly of Sanders. He comes to Cleveland with a real opportunity to earn a role in the newly fortified QB room behind veteran Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Deshaun Watson.

>At the same time, the Browns expressed obvious interest in Sanders at the Senior Bowl held down in Mobile, Alabama. Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski were understandably focused on his performance. Berry selected Dillon Gabriel with his third round pick and did not take Sanders. He remained hopeful about landing Sanders should he fall deeper in the draft.

“We felt like it got to a point where he was probably mispriced relative to the draft,” – Andrew Berry

Berry’s first calls came late in the fourth round, as he tried to strike a deal to move up to select Sanders. As he later admitted, that was not a realistic move. For Sanders, he noted the purchase price was very low. When I asked whether he thought Sanders could outplay his draft position, he answered without hesitation.

“Really, the acquisition cost was pretty light, and it’s a guy that we think can outproduce his draft slot,” – Berry

Sanders himself admitted through the pre-draft process that he should have handled some things in a different manner. He underscored his close relationship with the Browns throughout the interviews. That connection was what finally won them over to choose him.

“I think what happened was I had a great interview and great process with the Browns, and that’s why they were able to pick me,” – Dorian Sanders

With Sanders’ addition to the Browns’ roster, he’s not going to walk into the starting role. The opportunity for him to really make a mark is great, particularly as the team has focused heavily on revamping their offensive flow and pace.

Sanders’ path to making an NFL roster hasn’t come without its bumps in the road. For now, he’s still locked in on showing the naysayers wrong, still driven by what he believes is his purpose on this earth.

“What fuels me is my purpose in life and understanding the route that we’re going to have to take,” – Sanders

Berry was very positive on Sanders’ determination and ability to contribute to the club.

“Getting to know him over the course of the spring, he has a ton of resolve, and I think he’s going to find himself in a really good spot,” – Berry

The Browns’ decision to select Sanders reflects their strategy of building depth at key positions while addressing future needs. Providing a competitive playing field for every player still remains the organization’s greatest focus and dedication.

“Let’s get ready to go to work and prove all the people who passed on you wrong,” – Berry
