Cincinnati Bengals Part Ways with Linebacker Germaine Pratt

The Cincinnati Bengals became the first team to announce their 2024 free agency plans, saying they would release linebacker Germaine Pratt. As you likely know, Pratt, a key cog in the defense machine, requested a trade. This decision was made after the recent termination of defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. Pratt, age 29, says goodbye to the Bengals after an excellent 5 years and career blossoming in Cincinnati. He came to the team in 2019 as a third-round draft pick out of North Carolina State.

During his time with the Bengals, Pratt started in 88 of his 96 appearances and solidified himself as a reliable starter for six consecutive seasons. He was an important component in the Bengals’ consecutive AFC North championships. He helped guide their playoff runs to consecutive AFC Championship game appearances in 2021 and 2022. Despite being a rookie last season, Pratt owned the field with a staggering 143 total tackles. He returned two interceptions and two fumbles, cementing his playmaking defensive skills.

Pratt’s career highlights include a memorable goal-line interception during a wild-card playoff game against the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021, which helped propel the team to victory. Pratt is a terrific playmaker but he missed all of the team’s offseason workouts on the first day of mandatory OTAs. This speaks very directly to his desire to see a change.

The Bengals will have a $2.3 million dead cap charge as a result of his release. They’ll have $5.9 million less on their 2025 salary cap to pay them. Based on these achievements, the whole team is proceeding with optimism. Yes, they’ve now successfully floated Knight to be the leading candidate to replace Pratt.

“He’s going to walk in the door and fight for a way to contribute immediately.” – Bengals coach Zac Taylor

Pratt was to be entering the final year of a three year contract extension he signed back in 2023. His departure signifies a major turning point for the Bengals’ defense as they begin to prepare for the future. With his extensive experience and skills, Pratt will likely draw interest from other teams seeking to bolster their linebacker corps.
