And Chuck Pagano, the former head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, is back with Chuck Pagano! Specifically, he has signed on with the Baltimore Ravens as their senior secondary coach. This will be his return to the coaching ranks after a four-year hiatus. Pagano, 64, took over the position for real at the end of January. Yet even in character, he reveals a profound loyalty to the squad and an abiding zeal for coaching that has survived long beyond his retirement.
Pagano’s history with the Ravens began in 2008. He was a member of John Harbaugh’s first coaching staff, serving as the Ravens secondary coach. In 2011, he shot up to the defensive coordinator spot. Like his former defense in Birdland, under his leadership, the Ravens consistently ranked third in the NFL for both yards and points allowed. His successful tenure built up to a superb season this past fall, one that really increased his stock as a brilliant defensive tactician.
After his tenure with Baltimore, Pagano was head coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 2012-2017. Under his guidance, the Colts rejoiced in a stunning 56-46 record. At the same time, they earned playoff berths and won two AFC South championships. His biggest win by far was in 2014. That season, he led the team to the AFC Championship Game, where they played the New England Patriots.
Pagano said he was very happy to be coming back to Baltimore. He reflected, “This was just maybe the only chance that would bring me out from off the couch.” He confessed he had been tempted to go back to coaching in the time since he’d retired. He noted that his family felt he had retired from the game early on. My children, my spouse and my second daughters would say that I was too young to retire. It’s not that they don’t care, it’s that they really don’t get it.
He coordinates a talented backend anchored by clear NFL stars in rookie safety Kyle Hamilton and former Florida State standout cornerback Marlon Humphrey. Pagano is excited to be doing just that. He looks forward to getting on the field with Nate Wiggins. Wiggins, the No. 1 ranked cornerback in the country and projected to be a first-round pick in next year’s 2024 NFL Draft.
Pagano looked back on his time with the Ravens. He continued, “Some of my best memories and coaching moments were when I first came to Baltimore as a secondary coach. His return is a huge boost to Harbaugh’s staff. He has a wealth of experience and a competitive spirit that will go a long way returning to the organization.
Pagano is beginning a new chapter ahead with the Ravens. He’s going to try to replicate those successes and take it a step further by raising the defensive unit of the team. His passion and commitment to coaching is unmistakable and inspirational. Thompson’s dedication paves a bright future for both him and the Ravens’ defense.
