Chris Rushworth Takes on Player-Coach Role at Warwickshire

A veteran seamer with exceptional skills, Chris Rushworth has signed a one-year contract extension with Warwickshire. Along with playing, he will serve as player-coach for the team. This news comes on the heels of a breakout senior season by Rushworth. In May, he further proved his ability when, injured, he still picked up seven wickets in a rain-stopped County Championship draw with Worcestershire.

Now 39, Rushworth signed for Warwickshire ahead of the 2023 season. He is a former Durham player, where he holds the record as the club’s all-time leading wicket-taker. His years of experience and knowledge of the game should lend immeasurable help for the Bears. They are still very much committed to developing the youth players in the squad.

Rushworth demonstrated his magical ability during his recent performances. His best performance came in a famous seven-wicket haul in a County Championship local derby against Worcestershire. Rain severely impacted the game. Given the adverse weather situation and his injury, he turned in a head-turning performance that only scratched the surface of his vast potential.

Rushworth was keen to get started in his new role at his home county of Warwickshire. He pointed to his desire to develop younger players as an emphasis.

“As I’ve entered the twilight of my career, coaching has become more of a focus for me, and I am excited by the young talent at Edgbaston,” – Chris Rushworth

Professional game Ian Westwood, director cricket at Warwickshire, shared this view, underscoring the essential need to support developing bowlers.

“We recognise the need for more coaching support to our young, developing bowlers, and we are delighted that we can now create a role that utilises Rushy’s expertise and experience in this area.” – Ian Westwood

As Rushworth steps into this dual role, he aims to blend his competitive spirit on the field with his commitment to coaching off it. His contract extension and new role represent Warwickshire’s faith in his judgment to help steer the next generation of cricketers.
