Chris Paul, one of the greatest point guards the NBA has ever seen, is calling it quits this offseason. The player’s 1st party source corroborates his initial decision. Now 40, Paul has accomplished nearly everything there is to do in a professional basketball career. His accolades and achievements are numerous, earning his legacy cemented within sports history regardless. He now plays for the Los Angeles Clippers. As he prepares on Saturday for perhaps his last tilt vs. the Charlotte Hornets, perhaps the most poetic ending will take place in his home state of North Carolina.
Paul’s legacy in the NBA is extensive. He’s a 12-time All-Star, he’s achieved All-NBA honors 11 times over the course of his career. His ability to guard all positions has granted him praise, including nods as a nine-time All-Defense player. Further, he was voted Rookie of the Year in 2006. His incredible pedigree includes an NBA 75 Greatest Players list selection. This achievement speaks to the profound impact he’s had on the game.
On Saturday morning, Paul took to social media to reflect on his career, posting, “What a ride…Still so much left…GRATEFUL for this last one!!” Whether they are fans or players, this message resonates deeply. It captures his profound appreciation for the ride and showcases his lifelong zeal for the game. With a match up against the Hornets in his next game, it could be an extremely close one. It has special meaning as he makes the journey back to where it all began.
Now, as the season plays out, excitement grows at the prospect of making it Paul’s farewell. As are the countless fans and teammates who know full well that this will almost certainly be the last chapter of the Hall of Fame-bound star’s illustrious career. For six years, the Clippers have been just as dependent on Paul’s leadership and skills. Today, they need to deal with the reality of moving on without him.
