Chiefs Turn to Rookies to Reinforce Pass Rush Amid Concerns

Last season, they fell to a three-year low in generating sacks. As the defense falters, the team is hoping to rely heavily on the influx of new talent to improve their pass rush. Notably, the Chiefs selected defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott in the second round and end Ashton Gillotte in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Their performance will be instrumental as the Chiefs look to improve on a weak 2022 defense.

>The Chiefs’ pass rush isn’t the only thing that has sparked alarm, especially after the team’s abysmal performance last year. Veteran Chris Jones had only five sacks this year, his lowest total since his rookie season in 2016. On their defense, meanwhile, George Karlaftis led the team with an eye-popping eight sacks. The team knows they need to add bodies to their D-line, and they like what they got with their recent draft choices.

Omarr Norman-Lott, who had a successful collegiate career with 13.5 sacks over four seasons split between Arizona State and Tennessee, stands out as a promising addition. His pro day showed off that agility he gained while dropping 20 pounds. That development has increased the team’s enthusiasm about his potential to provide a game-changing impact on their pass rush.

“I believe I have a natural ability of getting off the ball.” – Omarr Norman-Lott

Ashton comes to us with a unique skill set. While his pass rushing production declined from 2023 to 2024, Tatum was able to produce 4.5 sacks this past season. His versatility and track record of success prove that if Kansas City brings him aboard, he’ll be a valuable addition.

Despite only being a week into training camp, Ryne Nutt, an offensive quality control coach for the Chiefs, was impressive with both rookies. He stated, “We feel like he can come in and help rush the passer … he was highly productive and highly disruptive and those are the things we look for.” Nutt highlighted Norman-Lott’s ability, noting that “he was one of the top defensive tackles in winning one-on-one pass rush,” which is precisely what the Chiefs need.

Chiefs’ personnel have made 1-for-1 comparisons between Norman-Lott and Karlaftis. Nutt went on to explain this point in greater detail. He said that although Norman-Lott might be bigger and not quite as fast as Karlaftis, their playing styles are extremely similar. This shared experience might make for a slightly easier transition for Norman-Lott to the professional game.

Mike Bradway, another key figure in the Chiefs’ scouting department, emphasized the importance of adding depth to the pass rush. “You can’t get enough of those guys,” he said, further validating the team’s plan to create a deeper, more versatile front.

Fortunately for the Chiefs, both rookies look ready to make a big impact on their Super Bowl contention efforts. Bradway was full of praise for Gillotte’s intensity on the field, saying, “This kid plays a hundred miles an hour. That type of work ethic will be essential as Kansas City continues to try and breathe life into their defense.

Despite the challenges faced last season, including low sack production and questions surrounding veteran players’ performances, there is a renewed sense of optimism within the organization. In addition, Chris Jones and George Karlaftis return, providing a reassuring anchor of experience to the defensive front. Their presence provides the rookies the opportunity to learn from these seasoned players.
