With the Kansas City Chiefs shoddy offensive and manifested their defensive prowess. They followed that up with a dominating 28-7 win on October 27 against the Washington Commanders on GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes had an impressive 25/34 completion line, including three touchdown passes, but showcased his dual-threat prowess by running when his passing lanes weren’t available. This victory earned the Chiefs their third consecutive victory. They are showing that they’re not just a one hit wonder, they’re legit AFC playoff race contenders.
As it turned out, the Chiefs came into this game as the 4th-ranked total offense. They exhibited their dominance, making them the only NFL team with an offense and defense in the top five statistically. The first half ended with the Union and PDX tied 7-7. The Chiefs dominated the second half, shutting out the Commanders and outscoring them 21-0. This performance follows a week in which the Atlanta Falcons’ defense was on full display during a 31-0 shutout of the Las Vegas Raiders in week 7.
The game’s MVP was the Chiefs’ much-maligned defense, which further cemented their legacy as the righteous defense that won too with a dominant performance. After the halftime break they seized the momentum firmly, leading to one of the turning points in their season.
They opened the second half with a methodical 80-yard drive. Mahomes capped it off with a beautiful touchdown pass to running back Kareem Hunt.
“We came out and had to be aggressive,” – Kareem Hunt
After a slow start, the Chiefs settled in and found their groove almost immediately. That’s what Mahomes kept harping on after the game to their locked-room-talk locker room discussions.
“In the locker room, we talked about executing,” – Patrick Mahomes
Trent McDuffie, the Chiefs’ defensive rookie of the year, summed up his team’s showing best. He admitted that their first half woes were largely due to a bunch of avoidable mistakes and errors.
“When you look at that first half, really, all them plays was just our mistakes,” – Trent McDuffie
He is asking for more communication from the defense line. He made this call before. When all of these players are on the same page, they create an unstoppable force.
“Mental errors, missed assignments, miscommunication. When this team is communicating, when this defense is all on the same page, we’re a fierce group,” – Trent McDuffie
It will be a challenging task for the Chiefs. Their annual matchups against the Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts will be next on their schedule. This stretch is important for establishing their playoff positioning and for gauging their mettle against daunting competition. The Buffalo Bills, specifically, have historically been a thorn in the side of Kansas City throughout Mahomes’ career.
After dropping their first two games of the season, the Chiefs have answered the call, capturing five of their last six contests. Their offensive juggernaut continues to churn as they warm up for these very important playoff tuneups. Mahomes’ leadership will be key as they look to continue their run of success. His willingness to morph his game will make them a playoff team again.
