They’ve opted to pick up fifth-year options on the contracts of their two best defenders, Trent McDuffie and George Karlaftis. This action reinforces the team’s continuing ability and deep commitment to retaining talent of national caliber. The Ravens are hungry to capitalize on recent successes from fellow NFL franchises.
Trent McDuffie, selected as the 30th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has made significant contributions since joining the Chiefs. Over the course of his career so far, he’s made 43 regular-season starts and appeared in 10 postseason contests. McDuffie’s defensive prowess is evident in his impressive statistics: he has recorded eight forced fumbles, 4.5 sacks, and two interceptions. In 2023, that status was confirmed as he was named an All-Pro first-team selection. His 10.5 sacks tied for the team lead, too, helping create his reputation as an irreplaceable piece of the Chiefs’ defense.
Defensive end George Karlaftis, taken 21st overall that year, was drafted one spot ahead of McDuffie. Since then, he’s emerged as a key cog along the team’s defensive front. He has 24.5 sacks in the regular season and added eight sacks in playoff appearances. Karlaftis’s performance has consistently demonstrated his ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks, making him an integral part of the Chiefs’ success on defense.
Each player has continued to demonstrate tremendous development since their inaugural campaigns. Their electrifying efforts have been key in providing the Chiefs an offensive edge and competitive advantage in the explosion of recent seasons.
