The Kansas City Chiefs just made a huge move to protect Patrick Mahomes at all costs. They brought in veteran tackle D.J. Humphries after going through a seven-man left tackle revolving door last season. The 31-year-old is a former first-round draft pick from 2015. As a player, he spent eight seasons over his long career as an NFL starting quarterback with the Arizona Cardinals. His experience and skill set will help enhance the Chiefs’ offensive firepower. Just like real football players, they hope to improve on their past efforts with the new season fast approaching.
>Kingsley Suamataia and Wanya Morris battled for left tackle spot on Chiefs. Their performances did not necessarily deliver the level of consistency. Their inability to protect the quarterback directly led to their benching. With a need to stabilize its offensive line, the team pulled the trigger. With playoffs on the way, the Chiefs needed a better option at left tackle. That’s why they traded for Humphries.
As for Humphries, he has had his own issues over the past couple of seasons. Late in 2023, he tore his ACL while as a member of the Arizona Cardinals, which drastically limited his availability. After returning from his injury, he was picked up by the Chiefs towards the end of the 2024 season. He finally made his debut with the club in Week 14 vs. the Los Angeles Chargers. Unfortunately, a hamstring injury cut his playing time short, sending him to the sidelines early in the game.
Following the injury, Humphries made his return for a Week 18 game against the Denver Broncos. After winning the AL MVP award, he was benched in favor of a rookie as a starter throughout the playoffs. Instead, Joe Thuney suddenly became the starting left tackle for all three postseason games. This short-term decision continued to show the competitive depth of the team’s offensive line, heading into key playoff matchups.
