The Chicago Bears have announced the release of defensive end DeMarcus Walker and tight end Gerald Everett, a strategic move projected to save the team approximately $10.75 million in salary cap space. The decision comes as the Bears seek flexibility for future roster adjustments and financial maneuverability.
DeMarcus Walker, 30, joined the Bears in 2023 on a lucrative three-year deal worth $21 million, with $15.65 million guaranteed. Over his tenure, Walker started 29 games across two seasons, demonstrating his prowess with a career-high 16 quarterback hits in the 2022 season. He also recorded eight tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks that year. However, despite his contributions, Walker's $5.2 million salary and $5.916 million cap hit for the upcoming season made him a target for cost-cutting measures.
Gerald Everett's tenure with the Bears was notably less impactful. Signed last March to a two-year, $12 million contract, Everett struggled to find his place in the Bears' offensive scheme. Despite his connections to former Chicago offensive coordinator Shane Waldron—established during their time with the Rams and Seahawks—Everett managed just eight receptions for 36 yards throughout his time with the Bears. His release alone contributes $5.5 million to the cap savings.
These moves reflect the Bears' ongoing efforts to optimize their roster and financial strategy. By releasing Walker and Everett, the team gains significant cap space that can be redirected towards future acquisitions or contract renegotiations aimed at strengthening their competitive position.
