Ben Johnson expressed his disappointment with the halftime interview he provided. This was a nice follow-up to the team’s recent Week 4 win against the Las Vegas Raiders. The Bears narrowly won the game with a score of 25-24, thanks in part to a critical play by cornerback Josh Blackwell, who blocked a 54-yard field goal attempt by Daniel Carlson.
>Thinking back on that interview after the game, Johnson was still in awe. He owned up to the fact that he simply hadn’t thought about it in those terms at the time. “In the moment I, honestly, I didn’t think too much of it,” he remarked. This comment came after a query from Aditi Kinkhabwala, asking if he felt like he needed to take a different tack.
At 39 years old, Johnson knew the offense was better with this kind of performance through the first three weeks of the season. As he noted, the last game was a low point, one of the biggest blows. He focused on celebrating how well his team responded to stop the best of the offensive challenges. They displayed extraordinary “character” to take the lead themselves three times in the second half.
The Eagles’ head coach described the Disasters game as “a complete train wreck, dude. Clearly, our second half was nowhere near the levels we expect to play at. He argued that his players needed to press the “reset button” at halftime. This would facilitate their recovery and reclamation of spirit to carry with them into the future.
Johnson promised that the forthcoming bye week would offer their squad plenty of time to introspect and self assess. “We’re so much better than this,” he said, doubling down on his confidence in the potential of his team. He hopes to spend this time helping his players better understand their roles. That will make them more effective when it comes time to play the actual game.
The Bears are heading into preparation for their next beast. Johnson’s job in the short term will be helping his crew rebound from what they just went through and help instill a greater cohesiveness of identity on the pitch. The bye week has come at the ideal time for the Bears. They have enough time to regroup now and set additional goals for the rest of their season.
