The Chicago Bears have named Ben Johnson as their 19th head coach, marking a significant milestone in the team's 105-year history. Johnson, who previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, was introduced as the Bears' new head coach on Wednesday. The announcement came less than 48 hours after the Lions' playoff exit, showcasing the Bears' urgency in securing their top candidate.
Johnson emerged as a leading contender for the Bears' head coaching role after interviewing with multiple NFL teams, including the New England Patriots, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Las Vegas Raiders. His successful tenure with the Detroit Lions, where he architected a top-five scoring offense for three consecutive seasons, made him a highly sought-after candidate. At 38 years old, Johnson brings a blend of creativity and strategic acumen to his new role in Chicago.
The Bears intensified their pursuit of Johnson, understanding his aspiration to compete against some of the league's top coaches, such as Dan Campbell of the Lions, Matt LaFleur of the Packers, and Kevin O'Connell of the Vikings. During his virtual interview with the Bears on January 11, Johnson articulated his vision and commitment to fostering a dynamic and competitive team environment.
The support for Johnson's appointment extended beyond the team's leadership. While dining at "Old Pueblo Cantina" in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, Johnson received a drink accompanied by a note from a fan urging the Bears to "Please hire Ben [Johnson]." This gesture touched Johnson and underscored the enthusiasm surrounding his hiring.
