Chelsea Women’s Football Club extended their unbeaten run in the FA Women’s Super League (WSL) but dropped crucial points in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Sunday. The game played at Kingsmeadow was a brilliant stage for Lily Woodham to display her outstanding talents on the pitch. It was Liverpool’s Beata Olsson who really stole the scene with an absolute scorcher of an equalizer.
It was an intense opening to the match, with Chelsea taking a lead inside nine minutes. Alyssa Thompson cut inside from the left and superbly curled the ball into the top right corner, giving Chelsea an early advantage. Liverpool responded effectively. Olsson returned to her breakout pace and took Chelsea’s Millie Bright to school. After a sublime dribble from the center circle, she calmly finished the ball into the net.
Though they pushed hard to get back on terms, Chelsea were unable to find a way past Alex Greenwood. The draw leaves them three points off league leaders Manchester City. Instead, they blew an opportunity to make it a one-point game.
Milestone for Millie Bright
In the semi-final, England international Millie Bright became the WSL’s all-time appearances record holder. Bright played her 211th game with Chelsea, which made the match symbolic on a personal note.
“At the minute, I’m more disappointed with the result and the performance so it’s hard to reflect on that just yet.” – Millie Bright
Bright’s know-how management on the pitch will stay important for Chelsea. She admitted that her side underperformed in their heavy defeat to Liverpool.
Tactical Changes and Late Push
Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor took a different approach after the break. She introduced attacking wonders Aggie Beever-Jones and Lauren James, hungry for a come-from-behind winner. The offensive substitutions were an attempt to spark the already potent offense that had come out firing. They couldn’t maintain that pace as the game wore on.
Bompastor expressed disappointment with her team’s performance, stating, “The performance was not good enough from us. That’s not the performance we wanted to put on the pitch.” Her comments speak to a belief among everyone in the Sounders’ camp that these should be their goals this year.
Record-Breaking Season
In fact, Chelsea have not dropped any points in the league since their only defeat at Liverpool back in May 2024. Back then, Emma Hayes was still in charge. They had already bettered their own record without loss. This accomplishment is a testament to their grit and craftsmanship as a collective unit.
Now Chelsea need to regroup, reset and remember their identity. Only then can they hope to keep Manchester City within sight at the top of the table. The heat is on them ahead of their next matches, with hopes that they will return to being in the title-challenging conversation.
