Cincinnati Bengals running back Chase Brown is quickly becoming one of the team’s best treasures as they continue to develop a new-look offensive identity. This past summer, he made sure to rededicate himself on continuing to hone his craft. He focused particularly on pass-catching, which is key in the Bengals’ pass-centric offense. His training included valuable practice against top-tier competition, including New York Jets cornerback Michael Carter II.
Brown’s resolution to listen and improve has not escaped outside observers. He helped to hone these skills in partnership with Drew Lieberman, a world-class athlete development trainer. With Drew’s tutelage, he honed his craft in the run game and pass protection. This offseason focus has paid off, as he has emerged as the Bengals’ featured running back, especially following Zack Moss’s season-ending neck injury.
Though a small sample size, Cincinnati’s preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles displayed his newfound capabilities to a tee. He made an impressive play, catching a pass from star quarterback Joe Burrow while faced with coverage from standout receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. After making the catch, he executed a stiff-arm on a defender and maneuvered down the sideline for a 9-yard gain.
Brown’s potential to help in all three aspects of the game is key for the Bengals. They are aiming for a faster new-look offense this season. He provides elite assistance in the run game. He’s a great pass protector, something critical in the modern NFL era.
Bengals’ position coach Justin Hill emphasized the significance of pass protection for running backs: “What else do you do if it’s not first-and-10? If it’s third-and-5, can we count on you in pass protection? That’s one of the first things I watch — is he a liability or can he do it? Can he take on a big role on third down?”
Brown is immersing himself deeply in his new role. Approaching the game with that mindset has him always prepared for whatever the field of play throws at him. His work ethic and professionalism have turned him into a player to watch this season. I mean, I’m always just monitoring him and being prepared. I don’t know, I mean, he’s literally the best in the world at what he does. He’s going to get you that ball anyhow,” Brown said of his QB Burrow.
