Charvarius Ward has inked a significant three-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts, valued at up to $60 million. The deal promises $35 million in guaranteed money, including a $20 million signing bonus. This move unfolds as the Colts continue to bolster their secondary, having already benefited from Ward’s contribution in five of their final six games during the 2023 season.
Ward's absence in the December 30th game against the Detroit Lions was due to a personal milestone—the birth of his son, Charvarius Jr. With a commendable record of 10 interceptions and 70 passes defended over his seven-season career, Ward's journey began with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018. His performance peaked in 2023, earning him his first Pro Bowl selection and a spot on the second-team All-Pro list. That year, he amassed 72 tackles, five interceptions, and a forced fumble.
The cornerback's departure from the San Francisco 49ers was influenced by personal tragedy. Following the death of his 1-year-old daughter, Ward expressed difficulty returning to the Bay Area due to the trauma experienced there. Despite this emotional hurdle, he played what he described as the best two seasons of his career with the 49ers in 2022 and 2023, following his $42.5 million contract signed in March 2022.
At 28 years old, Ward continues to face challenges related to post-traumatic stress. He reportedly experiences symptoms such as vomiting and nocturnal sweats. During the 2023 season with the 49ers, he missed three games as he navigated his grieving process.
