Charlton Athletic surged into the League One play-off positions with a commanding 2-0 victory against Stevenage at The Valley. The Addicks, who have enjoyed a remarkable run of form, extended their unbeaten streak to five matches, having won four of those contests. Despite dominating the game, Charlton was unable to add more to their tally against a resilient Stevenage side.
The match saw Charlton struggle initially to create clear opportunities, but persistence paid off as they broke the deadlock just before half-time. Summer signing Matty Godden initiated the decisive move with a clever flick to Tyreece Campbell, who adeptly converted Conor Coventry's precise low cross at the near post. This marked Campbell's 12th goal of the season, giving Charlton a crucial lead.
Stevenage entered the match on the back of three consecutive victories and started strongly. Jamie Reid came close for the visitors with a shot that hit the side-netting from a challenging angle. Additionally, Charlton's goalkeeper, Ashley Maynard-Brewer, had to make a decisive intervention to thwart Stevenage’s Louis Appere as he attempted to round him.
Charlton solidified their advantage early in the second half. In the 49th minute, Godden's left-footed attempt rebounded off the post, and Luke Berry was on hand to calmly slot home the rebound. This goal underscored Charlton's dominance and ensured that their unbeaten home run extended to seven matches.
Despite facing pressure from Stevenage in the opening minutes, Charlton's resilience and tactical discipline saw them through. The win propelled them to sixth place in League One, further cementing their ambitions for promotion.
