Charlotte Edwards Takes Helm at Hampshire Amid Calls for England Coaching Role

Charlotte Edwards has been appointed as the head coach of Hampshire's cricket team for the 2025 season, further establishing her prominence in the cricketing world. Edwards, a former captain of the England women’s cricket team, is an important, influential figure to have made her mark in cricket. On domestic and global stages alike, she has empowered teams to increase their impact and achieve success. Her appointment as the first in the changed county arrangements in England and Wales is an exciting development. This position is the exciting culmination of her vibrant career.

Edwards’ coaching genius is an open secret. She led the Mumbai Indians to the first two titles in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in India. Not only that, she led Southern Brave to success in The Hundred. Under her captaincy, the Southern Vipers have lifted five domestic trophies. This long-standing list of awards highlights her talent and success as a coach.

Her experience goes far beyond the coaching realm, as she had a remarkable international career that played out through 2016. During her time as a player, Edwards spent a decade captaining the England women's team before being succeeded by Heather Knight. Knight notably steered England to World Cup glory a year after Edwards' departure, but many believe that Edwards' foundational work was instrumental to this success.

As of now, Edwards is the odds-on favorite to become the next head coach of England’s women’s national team. Former teammate Lydia Greenway, meanwhile, has been an ardent public supporter of Edwards. Like Brown, she thinks Edwards should be the only candidate England seriously considers for the job. Greenway thinks that Edwards’ coaching style is exactly what the team needs to take the next step.

"In women's cricket, we've had a number of different coaches who have had very different styles and I think in the past, at times it has been a little bit too instructional," remarked Greenway.

"I think Edwards has the best of both. She has that balance of making sure players are accountable on and off the field, but also bringing in some fun and understanding that players are not robots. She can recognise the moments when they need that breathing space," Greenway added.

Alex Hartley, another supporter of Edwards, describes her as a "brilliant, outstanding coach" who can elevate the standards of the England team. Hartley says she has the necessary skills to bring the best out of the team under pressure and help them navigate through their internal conflicts.

"She'll really get hold of this team and she'll know how to make the standards better so they can compete under pressure," Hartley stated.

Edwards would be delighted to see England achieve a similar rebuild from their Ashes ignominy. She’s focused on the success of the national team. Her depth of experience shines through. Achievements speak for themselves. With this much success under her belt, AB takes a strong case for the most interesting head coach hire.
