16-year-old Charlie Woods, son of golf great Tiger Woods, created quite a buzz on Sunday. Shaffer’s beautiful ace on the par-3 3rd hole at TPC Sawgrass in the final round of the Junior Players Championship. This remarkable achievement at the time of the American Junior Golf Association tournament. It was held on the iconic Stadium course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
Over the course of the tournament, Charlie Woods carded an even-par 72 on the final day, finishing in a tie for 31st place. His performance showcased his burgeoning talent in the competitive world of junior golf. He finished 16 strokes behind Miles Russell, who claimed victory with a score of 70, winning the championship by two strokes. Russell’s victory follows the momentum of his recent victory. Earlier this month, he made it all the way to the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur and is currently the first alternate for the U.S. Walker Cup team.
The history of the venue only adds to the prestige of the hole-in-one. TPC Sawgrass is perhaps best known for being the course where Tiger Woods has won The Players Championship on two occasions. This relationship greatly enhances Charlie’s individual feelings of success. Perhaps no one could have blamed him more had he felt that same thrill when, last December, he recorded a hole-in-one during the final round of the PNC Championship.
His witnesses painted a picture of the scene that day. It took a moment for Charlie Woods to determine if his ball had fallen in the hole—the roars from the gallery if it did are what told him. This reaction is indicative of the incredible support and excitement of his ascent in the sport. His father’s legendary status just adds to the scrutiny and expectations he’s receiving.
Despite not finishing in the top ranks, Woods’ journey in this event is indicative of his growth as a golfer. Officially he scored as T19th in some scoring reports, an example of a golfer who proved steady across the board all week long at the national championship.
