The Los Angeles Chargers have reached a one-year agreement with running back Najee Harris, formerly of the Pittsburgh Steelers. This deal, which could be worth up to $9.25 million, brings the 27-year-old Pro Bowler to a team eager to bolster its backfield with his impressive track record. Harris, a first-round draft pick in 2021, has consistently demonstrated his prowess on the field, making him a valuable addition to the Chargers.
Harris's career began with a bang when he was selected to the Pro Bowl in his rookie season. That year, he amassed 1,200 rushing yards and added 467 receiving yards from 74 receptions. His versatility was evident as he showcased his dual-threat abilities. Over four seasons with the Steelers, Harris rushed for over 1,000 yards each year, totaling 4,312 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns. Despite an average of just 3.9 yards per carry in his NFL career, his durability and consistency proved invaluable, as he started all 68 regular-season games during his tenure with the team.
Before his time in the NFL, Harris made a name for himself at Alabama, where he was part of two national championship teams. Known for his explosive running style, he averaged an impressive 6.0 yards per carry during his college career. His senior season was particularly noteworthy as he led the SEC with 1,466 rushing yards and topped FBS running backs with 26 rushing touchdowns. His exceptional performance earned him All-America honors after leading FBS running backs with 30 touchdowns from scrimmage in 2020.
As Harris joins the Chargers, he brings not only his on-field talent but also a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success. A Bay Area native, Harris accounted for 10 touchdowns in his most recent NFL season and has accumulated 180 catches for 1,149 yards and six scores over four seasons. His presence is expected to significantly enhance the Chargers' offensive capabilities.
