The Los Angeles Chargers have dropped two hot new alternate uniforms. Especially after their bold all-navy design was rightly lauded as a “true modern throwback”. This new format ushers in one big, very profound shift. It marks the first time since the 2006 season that the team has taken the field in an all-navy ensemble, including a navy colored helmet. With a stylish design that’s an evolution, not a revolution, the Chargers’ new jerseys honor the franchise’s rich legacy.
Fan favorite Former Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman, during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, declared these new duds the “hardest jerseys in football.” His joy is indicative of the excitement from fans and players at the similar team-focused changes extending to one of the NBA’s most recognizable uniforms.
The new uniforms are hand-embroidered with special alphanumeric details that marry the team’s storied past to their larger than life present. A.G. Spanos, the Chargers’ president of business operations, pointed out that the new uniforms embody contemporary aspects. It is not enough for them to be 1:1 copies of past designs. “The uniform is not the exact same uniform. It’s been slightly updated and is a little bit more modern,” Spanos stated. The Chargers updated their lightning bolt logo. Now it feels in line with the modern aesthetic and, as [Council Chair] Phil Mendelson said, looks “a wee bit more streamlined.”
Adding a touch of vintage style, “Super Chargers” is embroidered in white on the neck line, along with “Charger Power.” The dark blue-and-white wool uniforms include oversized, modern-like numbers outlined in an old-school varsity letter type — a perfect mix of cutting edge and retro charm.
LaDainian Tomlinson, the greatest player in Chargers history, nailed it when asked about his favorite memories tied to the team’s uniforms. He became the first person to wear the old navy design during the whole 2006 season. In that magical season, he topped the NFL with 1,815 rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns, an incredible feat.
The Chargers are bringing in powder blue pants to their uniform rotation! These new pants will be worn with the team’s new home powder blue jerseys or road white jerseys. This new addition showcases their team’s energetic color palette and gives fans more flexibility in how they choose to showcase their team.
The time of the Chargers’ past uniform design was very much transformational, and Spanos wanted the new look to evoke that. What a time that was, that Hall of Fame trio of [Dan] Fouts, [Charlie] Joiner, Kellen Winslow and the Air Coryell Era. And at the same time it was a really revolutionary period…” he remarked. This respect for the team’s history and tradition strikes a chord with fans who appreciate nostalgia while at the same time favoring forward-momentum.
When the thunderous safety Derwin James Jr, the former Charger deep down, let on his love for the new designs. “I feel like the Chargers have the best uniforms,” he remarked. He further expressed pride in the team’s color scheme: “There’s just something about the powder blue, the white, the gold. And once these new alternates drop, it’s not gonna be close.”
The Chargers’ last season in their previous navy design was marked by a remarkable 14-2 record, showcasing their competitive spirit during that period. With these new alternate uniforms, the team seeks to pay tribute to that legacy while looking ahead in a smart, modern way.
