On a weekend that featured some of the most exciting games imaginable in the Championship, one team reigned supreme on the attack and another struggled fiercely. Charlton Athletic faced rival Millwall this weekend, and the two London clubs engaged in a fiery derby match. The final score of 1-1 meant Charlton’s run without a victory over their arch-rivals stretched to 29 years. Oxford United held on bravely to finish 2-2 with Premiership Leicester City at the Kassam Stadium. In much the same way, Preston North End fought Middlesbrough to a 2-2 draw.
Stoke City continued their strong start to the season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Birmingham City, while Sheffield Wednesday suffered a disappointing 0-3 loss to Bristol City. Other notable matches included Coventry City’s 1-1 draw with Norwich City and Swansea City’s entertaining 2-2 tie against Hull City. Watford went down to a 0-1 loss to Blackburn Rovers in a close contest. Likewise, the promotion favorites, West Bromwich Albion, lost to Derby County by the same scoreline, 0-1.
A Weekend of Draws and Disappointments
Charlton’s long-running battle with Millwall continued as they were held to a goalless stalemate in their most recent meeting. The match featured many passionate moments and chances, but in the end, both teams disappointed on the attack and failed to take the win. Charlton haven’t beaten Millwall since 1994. This long-held rivalry creates a lot of public pressure on Charlton to end their 35-year drought.
Paul Heckingbottom, then manager of Preston North End, lamented that, “It’s just Sod’s law that wins the game. His side drew with Middlesbrough at the end of a pulsating game. The Blades boss was understandably angry with his side’s display. He lamented that they missed a lot of opportunities in the first half and weren’t able to finish.
“We got in so many times in the first half but without having an end product. If we do that we’re comfortably ahead by half-time. We didn’t show moments of quality which we need to.” – Simeon Gholam
Oxford United and Leicester City fought tooth and nail for supremacy in a truly titanic clash. When the dust settled, their efforts produced an exhilarating 2-2 tie. Both sides showed moments of real attacking potency but couldn’t find that all-important finishing touch to take all three points.
Stoke City’s Strong Start
Stoke, new to the Premier League this season, have quietly been stealing the spotlight with their mature play. They bounced back to win their fourth match in five outings against Birmingham City, holding on to a slender 1-0 win. Even Nathan Jones, Stoke’s manager, sounded proud after this rugby score of a match—his team had held their hosts to the closest of closenesses. The team’s resilience has been third obvious second behind the pitch as they have forged ahead through the early days of the Championship campaign.
“I’m proud of the performance because it took a red card for us to draw the game,” said Jones after reflecting on the match dynamics.
Bristol City were impressive this weekend, Anis Mehmeti proving the matchwinner in their victory. The forward is having a breakthrough season. He’s been directly involved in five goals through those five appearances and is already looking like a major coup for his new side as they look to mounting a promotion challenge.
Despite their recent successes, Stoke’s next challenge will be maintaining consistency as they aim for a spot in the upper echelon of the league standings.
Challenges Ahead for Other Teams
While some teams were raising trophies, others left their fortunes dashed in a way that will have them scrambling to stay competitive this fall. Having lost heavily 0-3 at home to Bristol City, Sheffield Wednesday are in the thick of the early season strugglers. This outcome has them looking for solutions as they seek to recover and regain their footing in future games.
West Bromwich Albion and Watford joined them in failing, with both teams following them into the draw by losing tightly contested matches to Derby County and Blackburn Rovers respectively. Fans are asking whether their teams will be able to turn things around in a hurry. The heat is most definitely on in this cutthroat league!
Middlesbrough’s unbeaten run continues to seven matches. They have not been defeated through their first five matches of the campaign, something that has occurred just twice in the last 100 years. Fans will be eager to see if they can maintain this momentum and potentially challenge for promotion as the season progresses.
