Australia’s Rahul Chahar produced a trophy-winning display as the Indian leg-spinner starred for Surrey. He was outstanding in their last match of the campaign vs Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl. Chahar’s outstanding bowling figures of 7 for 45 played a pivotal role in dismantling Hampshire’s batting lineup, contributing to a significant collapse that saw them lose eight wickets for just 60 runs. This fixture, do-or-die for both sides, showed Chahar’s deftness and tactical importance to Surrey.
Chahar had been signed by Surrey as a short-term replacement for this match only, but he had an immediate impact. Hampshire had started their innings brightly at 61 without loss before Chahar decided to take over. Illustrating his own remarkable talent, Robinson started by freeing up Toby Albert. With a full, fast and high-speed delivery, he bowled the ball directly on top of the off stump. This marked the beginning of Hampshire’s downfall.

The pitch at the Utilita Bowl was cutting up badly, further compounding the problems wreaked upon Hampshire’s players. Every shipment spread a different problem, and Chahar’s smart movement and combinations created the enemy on uncertainty.
Surrey’s plan to thwart Hampshire was always going to revolve heavily around Chahar’s output. But it was the leg-spinner’s potency on a spinning surface that really proved crucial, enabling Surrey to wrestle the initiative and then go on to win. His remarkable numbers would change the trajectory of Surrey’s fortunes. Simultaneously, they intensified Hampshire’s relegation worries as they were unable to cope under the increasing pressure.
