The Boston Celtics have exercised their option to part ways with 32-year-old forward Georges Niang. They’re just putting the final touches on a deal to sign Chris Boucher. Niang’s salary, which exceeds $8 million, will be absorbed into Utah’s trade exception stemming from the recent John Collins deal. This is the most notable step of the Celtics’ roster maneuvering, as they prepare to head into the new season.
Niang was initially brought to the Celtics in the three-team Kristaps Porzingis trade that included the Atlanta Hawks. Now, he’s back with the Utah Jazz, the team he spent four years with from 2017 until 2021. His tenure with the Jazz was unforgettable, as he aided the team’s efforts and found individual success in their playoff runs.
During the course of his career, Niang has made a name for himself as a high-volume, consistent deep shooter. He has a very good career 39.9% three-point average. He continues to shoot over four 3-point attempts per game at a 42.5 percent clip. Now, entering his 10th season in the league, Niang’s experience is a tremendous asset. His shooting will be a huge asset to the Jazz as they continue to try to upgrade a talented roster.
The decision to sign Boucher comes as part of the Celtics’ strategy to strengthen their frontcourt and increase overall team depth. The addition of Boucher adds versatility and athleticism, complementing the existing lineup and providing more options for head coach Joe Mazzulla.
Overall, as the Celtics prepare for next season, this roster tweak positions them nicely to contend. As Niang goes out and Boucher comes in, Boston is looking to make themselves one of the top threats in the East.
