In last week’s review of the event Match Week 32 (MW32) of the English Premier League, pundit and former Player of the Year Jamie Carragger argued that these great performances came from the right teams. He zeroed in on Liverpool’s close win against West Ham and the thumpings of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
On Friday night at Anfield, Liverpool were able to sneak through against West Ham with a narrow victory. The home team struggled to find their rhythm but ultimately secured the three points, which were crucial for their aspirations in the league. Still, Carragher lapsed into the “good away goal” narrative by conceding that Liverpool had come away with a decent result. He warned about their inconsistency as they head into the home stretch of the season.
It was another humbling day at the office for Manchester United, going down to a fierce and complete routine defeat by bitter rivals Manchester City. Carragher cautioned that the current United squad is still “ensuring chaos continues.” He stressed this is only acceptable if they are making major progress to serve in the running for the top role. From the review, it was hard to look away from how the club’s current situation has completely reversed what has been its historical position in English football.
Tottenham were in a similarly perilous situation, having suffered a thrashing at the hands of their North London rivals over the weekend. Carragher focused on the difficult time that Spurs are having. He cautioned that this loss could take a drastic toll on their hopes of an undefeated season. The analyst pointed out that Manchester United and Tottenham must fix their mistakes as soon as possible to prevent slipping even further.
In his review of MW32, Carragher took a great snapshot of the Premier League landscape. He particularly noted the huge inequities among clubs at different competitive levels. He knew what Liverpool winning would mean. He said, “Woe be unto us if there is another title contender that comes up within the league.”
