Carolina Panthers wide receiver Xavier Legette was involved in a wild brawl during the Panthers’ preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns. As such, he deserved to be ejected from that game. The accident occurred on a run play. Legette’s long block on Browns safety Rayshawn Jenkins backfired poorly, setting off a chaotic fight that rumbled between the two players. The exhibition ended in a 30-10 win for Cleveland.
Immediately after the game, Legette was mysteriously missing from the locker room, giving rise to speculation about his behavior. After the incident, he used social media to express regret for what he had done during the fight. Panthers head coach Dave Canales addressed the incident, stating, “We ask our receivers to finish the play with hands on. He was,” and elaborated on the sequence of events that led to Legette’s ejection.
“He had his hands on the guy the whole time. Through the echo of the whistle the guy swung and chopped his arm down. Xavier just kind of held on to his jersey.” – Dave Canales
It’s not just Legette’s play that has him in the news lately, but his actions on and off the field. Beyond his stellar on-field play, Jackson has made news for his off-the-field activities. Perhaps most impressively, he once rescued a friend marooned in some muck after an ATV ride, showing his dedication to friendship and adventure over everything.
Legette joined some members of the team on a pre-training camp trip to Minnesota that was mostly organized by teammates Bryce Young and Adam Thielen. On this trip, he refused to step into the St. Croix River. This moment showed a more prudent counterbalance to his otherwise reckless spirit.
The Baltimore Ravens’ NFL wideout also horse swapped at the Kentucky Derby, where he had his very own celebrity Chef Guy Fieri moment. Fieri was visibly hyped to find out how Legette cooks raccoon. Find out how Legette resolved the issue by not revealing the specifics, and discover the captivating story behind his culinary talent.
Legette’s rookie year with the Panthers hasn’t been as smooth sailing. The team’s answer to his up-and-down play was to spend their 2025 No. 8 overall pick in that draft. To help counter that and improve their receiving corps, they chose Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan.
The further into the preseason we get, the more his on- and off-field behavior will be under a microscope. His recent ejection was a costly reminder and public display of the constant balance between competitiveness and sportsmanship in which athletes and their respective teams must operate.
