Carla Ward has been appointed as the new head coach of the Republic of Ireland women's national football team. Accepting this responsibility, Ward will guide the team through to the end of the 2027 Women's World Cup campaign. She steps into this role immediately, succeeding Eileen Gleeson, who departed following Ireland's disappointing Euro 2025 qualification campaign.
Ward brings with her a wealth of experience and a notable coaching pedigree. Previously, she was part of the United States' coaching staff under Emma Hayes, contributing to the team's Olympic gold victory in Paris in 2024. Her expertise will be complemented by assistant coach Alan Mahon and goalkeeping coach Emma Byrne. Mahon, a former Ireland men's international, has experience from his time in the Women's Super League with Manchester City. Byrne, a former captain and record appearance holder for Ireland's women's team, adds further depth to the coaching setup.
"I am hugely excited to get going with the Ireland women's national team," said Carla Ward.
Ward's immediate task is to prepare for the 2025 Nations League campaign, which begins with a home match against Turkey on February 21. Her appointment comes after she left her previous role as Aston Villa boss at the end of last season. Under her leadership, Aston Villa made significant strides, gaining recognition for their competitive performances.
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has expressed confidence in Ward's ability to lead and inspire the national team. Marc Canham, FAI chief football officer, expressed his enthusiasm over Ward's appointment.
"We are thrilled to announce a head coach of Carla's pedigree," stated Marc Canham.
Ward replaces Eileen Gleeson after Ireland failed to qualify for Euro 2025, exiting in the second round of the play-offs against Wales. Despite this setback, Gleeson's tenure saw Ireland promoted to Nations League A and achieve some success on the international stage.
"This is an unbelievable opportunity, not just with the national team, but in helping to add to the fantastic work being done to develop women and girls' football," added Carla Ward.
