In a thrilling contest that opened the 2023 edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), the Delhi Capitals clashed with the Gujarat Giants. Only two innings totaled 100 runs, as the game was dominated by sensational performances – most notably, Shafali Verma and Lizelle Lee’s blistering efforts that propelled the Capitals to 185.
Capitals batter Lizelle Lee made her mark on the match early, going on to produce a knock of 20 runs from 15 balls. Her innings, which featured three fours and a six, epitomised her aggressive intent at the top of the order. Despite her best efforts, she was bowled out shortly after having faced a little over two overs worth of action.
Coming in at number three, like Lee, was Shafali Verma, but Verma’s innings were much quieter. She was able to achieve an average of 9 runs off 9 balls – with one of those runs being a four! Though her innings was short, it was instrumental in giving her team the best start possible to set the tone during a must-win game.
Even the Gujarat Giants bowling department had significant impacts on the match, similar to their Punjab counterparts. Renuka bowled a single over and conceded 10 runs. Gautam had an even larger task ahead of her, giving up 11 runs in her one-over spell. Devine was super economical, only conceding 7 runs in her over. On the other side, Gayakwad put in a world-class display, conceding only 4 runs in her one over.
This cordiality would be put to the test, with both teams competing hard, playing to win from the outset. The Capitals relied on their strong batting lineup to set a challenging target, while the Giants countered with a disciplined bowling attack.
