Cameron Ward Faces Challenges in Preseason Game but Remains Optimistic

Cameron Ward, the rookie quarterback for the Tennessee Titans, displayed his big-play ability under duress in their daunting second pre-season match-up. During his test against the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday night. The Titans escaped with a close victory, 23-20. Despite Ward’s stellar performance, the first-string offense with Ward, 5-star running back Chris Johnson didn’t find their groove during that game.

In the head-to-head, Ward only carried twice and completed two of seven pass attempts for 42 yards. His day was highlighted by a beautiful 35-yard diamond to Elic Ayomanor. Problem was, he had his share of issues, most glaringly an incomplete pass to Van Jefferson. Calvin Ridley and Tyler Lockett being out only added to the rookie’s expectation. Plus, Bengals head coach Brian Callahan had planned for him to play just two series.

“I wanted to send them back out there,”

Ward’s on-field time went beyond his intended two series, giving him more chances to get experience. The young quarterback expressed his enthusiasm about competing against A.J. Terrell Jr. during the week leading up to the game.

“I felt real good seeing good guys like A.J. Terrell and [Ridley],”

  • Cameron Ward

Even with everything weighing on the offense, Ward is excited his continued growth as a player. He knows in his heart of hearts he’s going to get better and better each week. During every dynamic, in-game experience, he is continuing to learn pertinent skills. His eyes light up at the thought of his team’s impending matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. He wants to demonstrate that he’s grown and learned and can respond to the changing demands of his job.

Despite continuing offensive struggles, the win over the Falcons brings a new lease of confidence for the Titans. Coaches and players understand that creating that cohesion will be key as they all move into getting ready for the regular season. Ward is still getting used to the NFL’s pace and complexity. Exposure and learning on the fly will be critical to his individual success and maximized potential success for the Titans as an organization.
