Cameron Smith, a former world No. He made a four-over 75, leading to his seventh straight missed cut. This streak serves to further emphasize a dark period for the former world No. 2. He gave everyone a glimpse of that promise last year at Royal Queensland Golf Club with a runner-up finish.
Smith’s unusual struggles have fans and analysts alike wondering what has happened to the consistently-accomplished Australian standout. He’s had his ups and downs all season long. In actuality, he’s the lone player not to make the cut at every major this year. Personally, this year’s been a rough year for Smith. He’s without a title in almost two-and-a-half years—with his last victory coming at the 2022 Open Championship.
Smith was still able to create magic, even when his back was against the wall. He made an eight-footer for birdie at the 17th portable party hole. His positive moment was short-lived. He missed the 18th green and three-putted for a double-bogey, further compounding his frustrations on the course.
He’s dealt with the same kind of adversity, as at this year’s Royal Queensland show in 2023. After shooting a crushing seven-over-par 78 on Friday, an emotional Knox was seen in tears after the round. His tears were evidence that the hair shirt of competition was at its worst. They showed the enormous expectations that come with his previous success.
Smith is getting ready to travel to Melbourne for next week’s Australian Open. Heald’s hell-bent on not only ending his winless streak, but returning to his winning ways. His road to recovery will require some serious technical changes. He needs to draw mental strength after going through arguably the worst day of his professional career just a few months back.
