The Tennessee Titans are in the midst of a coaching transition themselves after firing Brian Callahan in October. Incoming quarterback Cam Ward was already focused on becoming an integral part of the search for their next head coach. Titans, we’re looking for culture carriers who possess exceptional leadership qualities. Following a disappointing 2025 campaign, they are hell bent on finding the right guy to help restore the team’s identity and give the franchise new life.
Ward said he was looking forward to talking to all interested candidates to find the best fit for the coaching position. He stated, “Every coach who gets the opportunity to come here, I want to have conversations throughout the process with them. I’m going to be here for that whole time.” His commitment means that he, too, believes that the team’s future is tied to downtown. Beyond that, though, he wants to create an environment that would foster any kind of growth and development.
The Titans cut Callahan for a failure of the unit to develop as a team and not enough development from Ward as an individual. During training camp, Ward was Callahan’s biggest advocate. He said he was hopeful that Callahan would take his coaching to a level where he would be recognized as one of the best offensive line coaches in the league. As you can imagine based on that introduction, the team’s performance did not meet those expectations.
In his first season as starting quarterback, Ward demonstrated flashes of potential, including a notable play where he connected with Gunnar Helm for a 34-yard touchdown pass. This perfect blend of Ward’s talents and the lack of depth shown by the Titans all season long was on full display.
Under new interim coach Mike McCoy, the Titans went on to finish with a horrendous 1-8 record. This performance only added to the longstanding calls for change within the organization. The on-field struggles have been genuine and tumultuous for the Titans. They’ve failed to find their collective and individual identity these last two seasons.
Chad Brinker and Mike Borgonzi, members of the Titans’ management team, are putting their foot down. They have all separately discussed with Ward his role in the coaching search. Formative key player opinions are indispensable in helping IO identify the best possible candidate. They can help us better identify who will suit the team’s short-term needs and fit into our long-term goals.
As you’ll remember, the Titans are currently in hot pursuit of replacing coach Mike Vrabel. They are looking for candidates who can deliver effective leadership along with a bold vision that can help the franchise restore its identity and culture. The result of this search will be hugely consequential. Moreover, it’ll affect how soon the Titans can bounce back to being a true Super Bowl contender.
