Cam Ward, a quarterback from Miami, is the clear frontrunner to be selected first overall in the upcoming NFL draft by the Tennessee Titans. As of Thursday, Ward had counterbalanced odds of -20,000 at ESPN BET. That further cemented his status as the consensus No. 1 overall pick. This decision completely flips his betting line on its head. The 2019-20 Pelicans began their race for the No. 1 pick as a No. 7 dog on the No. 1 pick odds board.
Ward’s rise to the top of the draft board has been nothing short of surreal. His odds have soared from -1000 at the end of March to an astonishing -20,000 last week. During the course of the college football season, he consistently outperformed notable rivals such as Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter of Colorado. By January he had established himself as the frontrunner.
The Tennessee Titans likely have the first overall pick in the draft. Recent clues suggest that they have a pronounced bias in favor of Ward. Joey Feazel, head of football trading at Caesars Sportsbook, stated that “Everything the Titans have hinted at over the past few months suggests that Cam Ward is their guy, and this is why we are offering -50,000 on Cam Ward to go No. 1 overall in the draft.”
On Wednesday, Ward’s surge in popularity prompted sportsbooks to move his over/under draft position significantly from 9.5 to 21.5. This indicates that bettors are more and more sure about his likelihood of being picked first.
Ward is clearly out in front and loving every minute of it. At the same time, Shedeur Sanders is the odds-on favorite to be the second QB taken in the draft, with -200 odds on ESPN BET. Behind Sanders comes Jackson State cornerback Travis Hunter, who is the heavy favorite to be selected second overall to Colorado. Penn State’s Abdul Carter is projected to be picked third, with LSU’s Will Campbell and Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty rounding out the top five.
The New Orleans Saints currently own the ninth pick. There’s reason to be doubtful of their actual desire to choose Sanders. With the draft right around the corner, both analysts and fans can’t wait to see how these predictions begin to unfold.
