Calvin Ridley, wide receiver for the Tennessee Titans, has turned into an absolute centerpiece on the grass. Perhaps more importantly, he is a proven star in the locker room and a leader of men. In the 2023 season, Ridley had accomplished this feat with an eye-popping 76 receptions so far. He compiled 1,016 yards and added eight touchdowns in 15 games played. His performance has turned out to be proof that he has truly bounced back and come into his own after a dark chapter of his career.
Ridley’s road back to the NFL wasn’t without its challenges. He struggled with some personal issues, one of which was a 2021 gambling suspension that caused him to miss a year of the game. During his time on the sidelines, he had bet on the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Atlanta Falcons. This sudden decision forced him to take a hard look at his life and career. As Ridley has candidly discussed, this extended absence ended up giving him the opportunity to become “mentally stronger.”
Reflecting on his experiences, Ridley remarked, “I learned a lot of tools during that process. I still use those things today when it gets hard. I don’t let myself go too far down. I’ll flush out the bad thoughts, refresh my mind every time I go home.”
Beyond his personal learning challenges, Ridley faced major physical challenges, too. He dealt with a broken left foot all of last season, which needed surgery in June. Even after the injury he rushed back to play affecting his performance going into his senior year.
After missing most of last year, he had a beautiful homecoming with a vintage performance in his return game. He had eight receptions for 111 yards and yes, a touchdown! Ridley’s versatility was on display on plays such as this 27-yard strike on a dig route versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In his release, the Titans recognized Ridley’s commitment and effort. His teammates clearly recognized that leadership role, too, as they voted him one of the team captains for the 2023 season. This recognition is a testament, not just to his ability, but to his development as a leader. Offensive Coordinator Callen Moore went so far as to say this about Ridley’s maturation, “He’s really matured in his leadership. I’m actually really proud of Rid and the things that he’s accomplished in that realm over the course of the offseason. He’s deserving of it, he has earned it, and I’m glad his teammates see it the same way.
Ridley’s undeniable effect was on display during joint practices earlier this month. In the Titans’ first matchup against the Falcons, the team that drafted him 26th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. He certainly created a legacy with his teammates. Quarterback Cam Ward remarked, “I ain’t never had a receiver that moves and cuts like him to throw to. He’s arguably a top-five receiver in the NFL. I’m lucky to be able to play with him because he’s going to make me look good.
Despite the challenges he faced, including feelings of betrayal from his previous team, “It was like, ‘Dang, how could I be working so hard for [Falcons] and they just flicked me without even trying to protect me or anything?’” Ridley has channeled those emotions into positive growth.
Through this year’s campaign, Ridley has put any doubts to rest as a consistent receiver who can be trusted. He culminated with 1,017 yards on 64 catches and four touchdowns. His relentless pursuit of greatness is motivating as he shows no signs of letting up while raising the bar for those around him.
