In an unprecedented moment at the TPC Sawgrass, caddie JJ Jakovac made history by scoring a hole-in-one on the iconic Island Green during the annual contest held on Wednesday, preceding the Players Championship. This remarkable achievement marked the first time a caddie accomplished such a feat in the event's history, which has been held since 2000.
Jakovac, a celebrated figure in the golfing world as a two-time Division II national champion at Chico State and a two-time national player of the year, demonstrated his extraordinary skill by using a pitching wedge from 131 yards. The ball notably landed on the downslope of the green before rolling gracefully into the hole.
"It had to ride the wind to get there," – JJ Jakovac
Witnessing this historic moment were professional players Collin Morikawa, Jason Day, Min Woo Lee, and Isaiah Salinda, along with their respective caddies. As the ball dropped into the hole, the group erupted into celebration, with Jakovac running around in jubilation while being chased down by his fellow players and their caddies.
The contest is not merely for bragging rights; it offers substantial rewards. The winner receives an undisclosed prize fund, composed of donations from professionals in the field, as well as a $10,000 sponsor award. Additionally, they enjoy practical benefits such as a VIP parking space for the rest of the week at TPC Sawgrass. The accolades continue with an engraved money clip and having their name enshrined on a plaque inside the Tunnel of Champions.
Jakovac’s triumph not only secures him these prestigious awards but also cements his name in the annals of golfing history. His accomplishment adds another laurel to his already distinguished career and serves as an inspiration for caddies and players alike.
