Ángel Cabrera, the 55-year-old Argentine golfer, pulled off one of sport’s great comebacks. He captured his inaugural Champions major at that tournament just played at Greystone Golf & Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama. This victory is a huge personal victory for Cabrera. He managed these personal difficulties in recent years, during which he was incarcerated from 2021-2023 due to three assault charges against former partners.
Cabrera’s trek back to the top of the senior circuit has inspired storylines across baseball. Earlier this year, he secured his first win on the seniors tour at the Hall of Fame Invitational in April. He repeated that skillful play on the last day. Making nine birdies and only a single bogey, he cruised to his most recent victory. Cabrera played a spectacular back nine, making birdies at the par-4 16th and par-5 18th holes. With those three accomplishments, he moved his overall score to 20 under par.
On Sunday, Cabrera began the final round tied for the lead with Jerry Kelly at 18 under. Shortly after, officials were forced to suspend play entirely due to darkness. The next day, Cabrera grabbed the chance with both hands. He ended up just a shot ahead of Kelly and two clear of South Korean Y.E. Yang, who placed third.
Cabrera was as surprised as anyone at his success since returning to competitive golf. He’d done it in an astonishingly tight time frame.
“No, I didn’t know I would get there so quickly.” – Ángel Cabrera
Cabrera’s storied career boasts winning titles like the U.S. Open in 2007 and The Masters in 2009. His recent victory at the Champions major highlights not only his golfing prowess but his resilience in overcoming personal struggles.
