C.J. Stroud, the Houston Texans’ starting quarterback, has not participated in throwing during 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills throughout the first two weeks of organized team activities (OTAs). He hasn’t played because, instead of worrying about physical readiness, he’s had to contend with mental preparation and the aforementioned “general soreness” in his shoulder. This cautious approach reflects the team’s efforts to ensure Stroud’s long-term health as they navigate the early stages of their offseason program.
Stroud’s first experience with the starting unit was during the walkthroughs of the 11-on-11 period of practice. Even though physically he can’t practice, he still finds a way to stay involved. He’s taking this period to really explore the team’s playbook and sharpen his understanding of the offense.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans addressed Stroud’s situation, emphasizing the importance of taking precautions to safeguard the young quarterback’s health.
“We are taking extra precaution with him. He’ll be good to go. No concerns on my end.” – DeMeco Ryans
Of course, the Texans don’t want to overprotect Stroud as they seek further development in their revamped attack. On Wednesday, new offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik sounded confident that’s still their plan.

Ryans further emphasized the importance of the process itself as the team continues to adapt to new players and personalities.
“This is our first time lining up against an actual defense, so it takes time, and it’s a process to get there,” – DeMeco Ryans
Though Stroud participated at a limited scale, it’s clear that his focus on sharpening his craft is top of mind. With fingers crossed, the Texans are hoping this methodical management will pay dividends as they enter the 2023 season. By prioritizing mental reps alongside physical recovery, Stroud can maintain his development as a key player in Houston’s offensive scheme.
