C.J. Stroud, the Houston Texans’ rookie starter under center, just faced the toughest test of his nascent NFL career. He’s only played six games and he’s already tied for ninth in the league in sacks. On top of that, he currently sits 13th in most pressures for a QB. And he’s been sacked 52 times already—second-most in the NFL, behind Caleb Williams.
The disparity in his performance raises questions about the offensive line’s ability to protect him and the overall effectiveness of the team’s strategy. Even on paper, the Texans are struggling to hit their rhythm. Stroud’s performance thus far is a clear step down from his phenomenal rookie season.
DeMeco Ryans, the Texans head coach, seemed to recognize this as a team-wide issue. Accountability begins and ends with me…with me and my players.

Ryans further described a camaraderie among the players reflected on the field saying,

With Texans hoping to turn their fortunes around, Stroud needs to adjust fast or risk another season getting demolished before he even gets started. The pressure now building on him is indicative of a larger individual and team failure. That has to change going forward, particularly in the next few games if they want to help set Stroud up for success long term.
