NBA star and reigning league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the victim of a nighttime burglary at his Nichols Hills home on Thursday. The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m., coinciding with the Oklahoma City Thunder’s home game against the Washington Wizards.
As the carjacking spree continued throughout the night, would-be thieves forced their way into Gilgeous-Alexander’s home as well as evoking alarm from city police. The Nichols Hills Police Department is aggressively pursuing this case. They stated that the suspects fled the scene before officers arrived.
Local news camera crews were quick to document police activity on the scene outside Gilgeous-Alexander’s home within hours of the burglary being announced on Twitter. First, authorities noticed a disturbing pattern. What really connected these stories, though, were the few details in common over the recent burglaries at professional athletes’ homes around the United States in recent months. Surveillance footage released earlier this year showed thieves using the same method, commonly breaking through rear car windows to access vehicles inside.
Law enforcement representatives recently told Capitol Hill leaders that they are witnessing an increasing trend of lawless crime. They particularly emphasize that athletes’ homes turn into easy targets on game days when the players are not home.
“All of the suspects had left the scene before police arrived,” an official with Nichols Hills Police said.
While no arrests have been made in connection with this burglary, authorities reassured the public that there is “no reason to believe the public is in any danger.” The Department of Police is continuing to investigate all possible leads and still hope to bring this case to resolution quickly.
The Oklahoma City Thunder organization has decided not to comment further on the incident and has decided to refer all inquiries to the police department. As investigations proceed, all of us fans and residents hope that we address what it means for such crimes to increasingly target high-profile individuals.
