Chicago Bulls guard Ayo Dosunmu will undergo surgery on Wednesday morning, marking his first surgical procedure. The surgery addresses a long-standing fracture in the back of his left shoulder, which an MRI revealed. This upcoming surgery coincides with the final year of his three-year, $21 million contract. Dosunmu anticipates needing four to six months for recovery, aiming to be ready for the start of training camp next season.
Dosunmu's shoulder issues emerged during a game against the New York Knicks on February 20, when he first felt discomfort. Consequently, he missed the subsequent three games. Despite returning to play 23 minutes against the Toronto Raptors, he experienced an unusual pain that led to further examinations.
“My shoulder goes numb and [would pop] out in the back,” Dosunmu explained about his condition.
The MRI results showed that the fracture was at least a year old, even though Dosunmu does not recall how it originated.
"I don't remember where it started at, but I do remember having it," he stated.
Throughout this season, Dosunmu played 46 games, achieving career highs with an average of 12.3 points, 4.5 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game. Despite the injury, he demonstrated resilience and commitment to his team.
“It was something that I played on and I think I could have continued to play on, but I don't know for what reason,” Dosunmu remarked.
The decision to proceed with surgery aims to ensure his full recovery and readiness for future seasons. The young guard's determination to return stronger highlights his dedication to basketball and his team.
