The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have announced the promotion of Josh Grizzard to offensive coordinator, marking a significant step for the team as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season. Grizzard, who previously served as the team's passing game coordinator, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record to the role. His appointment comes after the Buccaneers conducted interviews with multiple candidates, making him the only internal choice considered for the position.
During his inaugural season with the Buccaneers, Grizzard played a pivotal role in developing an impressive third-down offense that achieved a conversion rate of 50.9%. This not only set a franchise record but also ranked as the highest in the NFL. The Buccaneers also excelled in third-down rushing, posting a 64.4% conversion percentage, which stands as the third highest in franchise history. Their efficiency in short-yardage situations was similarly commendable, with a 67.7% success rate on third-and-short plays.
Grizzard's coaching journey began at Yale in 2012 as a student assistant, eventually leading him to a position as a graduate assistant and quality control coach at Duke from 2013 to 2016. He then spent seven seasons with the Miami Dolphins, where he held various roles including offensive quality control and wide receivers coach. His diverse background has equipped him with the necessary skills to lead the Buccaneers' offense effectively.
Tampa Bay's head coach, Todd Bowles, praised Grizzard's capabilities, stating, "Josh is bright and innovative and was instrumental in our game planning and play design over the last year." This endorsement reflects the strong rapport Grizzard has built with players, fostering an environment that is conducive to continuity within the Buccaneers’ passing game.
Notably, Grizzard will be the eighth offensive coordinator for quarterback Baker Mayfield in his eight seasons in the league. Mayfield experienced a resurgence last season, throwing a career-best 41 touchdowns in 2024. The stability that Grizzard's promotion offers could be crucial for Mayfield as he seeks to build on this success.
