Bruins’ Marco Sturm Visits Patriots Practice to Gain Coaching Insights

Marco Sturm, the new head coach of the Boston Bruins recently stopped by the New England Patriots’ practice facility. He networked with the right staff, and learned the minutiae of training in the world of professional football. Logistics and timing The visit came at the tail end of an incredibly busy season for both teams. This provided Sturm with a distinct opportunity to glean impactful lessons from another sport.

During his time at the Patriots’ practice, Sturm conversed with head coach Mike Vrabel and special teams coordinator John Streicher. These sessions exposed him to different perspectives and multiple approaches to coaching and player relations.

As Sturm walked into the trophy room, he was met with a warm welcome from Patriots owner Robert Kraft. Daghe had pictured this gesture highlighting the strong relationship and conviviality between their two franchises. Sturm got a tour of the locker room and meeting rooms. He examined the Patriots’ organization’s day-to-day workings and culture at a granular level.

“Just the way he was leading on the field during practice — you watch that, with his passion and preparation. You could tell right away, he’s the guy on the field and everyone else is listening,” – Marco Sturm

Even as he recalled the trip later, Sturm laughed about the difficulty of putting Patriots players on skates. He drove home his awe of their perfect form and remarkable physical capabilities. He conveyed a unique desire to pursue the coaching side of football. He spoke about the need to identify different types of play.

The Patriots are still in the midst of a talented roster aging out. Not long after acquiring him, safety Jabrill Peppers was cut, and Kyle Dugger’s starting spot on the original 53-man roster was in doubt all summer. The coaching staff shifted their emphasis on safety play. Against the grain of the culture they cultivated Bill Belichick and Jerod Mayo — which was all about focus and discipline above all else.

In one of the biggest surprises of the roster, it was undrafted free agent outside linebacker Elijah Ponder who made the cut. This accomplishment further demonstrates the remarkable breadth of talent under one roof. Defensive coordinator Terrell Williams did mention Harold Landry III’s standout preseason play. As a freshman, he dazzled the coaches and won over the fans.

“He looks like a guy that has something to prove,” – Terrell Williams

Regarding the dodgeball role, Jaylinn Hawkins and Craig Woodson have taken charge of the position the past few weeks. Meanwhile, rookie outside linebacker Bradyn Swinson was among those released in a surprising cut as the Patriots finalize their roster.

Beyond transition on the roster, the team has dealt with injuries as well. Brock Lampe is an undrafted free agent out of fullback. He is one of eight players to now be placed on injured reserve due to a season-ending foot injury.

Sturm’s visit highlighted this interconnectedness of professional sports as well, and how coaches can learn from one another across disciplines. His comments ranged from specifics on how to structure meetings to how teams should plan out their days in the office.

“I’ve been here as a player, now as a coach, and it’s nice to see that connection,” – Marco Sturm

Sturm added that he felt thankful for the quickly extended welcoming reception that he received within the Patriots organization.

“He was so welcoming, and asked my kids a lot of questions, too. That was really nice to see,” – Marco Sturm
